Every year, on Aug. 6, in the city of Hiroshima, on August 6 and in the Nagasaki Peace Park, the Peace Memorial ceremony commemorates the anniversary of the victims of the atomic bombing. In the distant 1945, American bombers dropped atomic bombs on these Japanese cities. In Hiroshima, according to various estimates, during a breakdown and for several years, killed up to 140 thousand people, in Nagasaki about 80 thousand.
In recent years, a number of cultural events have been held between Slavutych, Hiroshima, and especially Nagasaki.
An exchange of children's Guerniks was held, Okoyagari koboshi exhibitions were organized.
Our good friend, Watanabe Minoru, Co-ordinator of the Okoyagari koboshi project, provides significant assistance in organizing these events in Slavutych. It was with his assistance that on April 26, a direct witness of radiation exposure in Nagasaki, Ihar Toyokazu, arrived in Slavutych. In Japan, there is a special term "hibakushi" - the so-called people who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Today in the world, Mr. Ihar performs the mission of Ambassador to the Peace. It is disturbing that on the day of the Chernobyl disaster, he was next to the Slavutych, and demonstrated his solidarity with all those who survived the Chernobyl disaster.
In the tragic days for the Japanese people, the team of the Center for the Development of the Child organized the action as a sign of solidarity with the Japanese cities. The little Slavutychs made their cranes, and at the same time they received from the children of Nagasaki symbols of peace. Slavutych is in solidarity with Hiroshima. Slavutych is from Nagasaki. Slavutych for peace.
Indeed, our countries and cities are geographically so far apart, but despite a considerable distance, we have many similarities: experienced trials, a common position in the pursuit of peace on Earth, and the release of the planet from nuclear weapons. And without exaggeration, we carry out a special mission in the world - so that the whole world community as much as possible knows about the consequences of a nuclear disaster.
